The iPhone is the perfect example that exhibits the ingenious aspect of American National Character. It was a revolutionary invention whose design continues to improve and become more visually stunning. This one device compacts a multitude of functions that previously were on separate pieces of technology, which facilitated the importance so many Americans have placed upon it.

Outspoken

These are beeswax and microcrystalline wax figures created by the artist Kiki Smith in 1990. The work if titled “Untitled” because the installation speaks for itself. The fact that this work received so much praise, demonstrates how the right to be outspoken and embrace differing perspectives is an ideal Americans hold very dear to their hearts.

Forward-Looking (but thinking of the past)

Fashion trends of the 21st century are less about creating new styles than recycling trends from past eras. Marc Jacobs 2012 fall collection was filled with 80s inspiration, but with a twist. Today Americans want clothing that is not only stylish but also highly functional. What we wear in the 21st century is as much about the message as the material. The fashion industry as a whole embodies the American desire to commemorate the past and expand on it.
