It's Font-amental

Trajan Regular

St. Matthews Mall, Louisville, KY, 10/30/15

This is an iconic logo that has changed and evolved throughout the development of this brand. This font is meant to symbolize sexiness and seductiveness. Here at the storefront in a mall the designers uses not only the font but also the color to evoke brand identification, and intrigue. These are signature Victoria’s Secret colors. Also amongst the array of stores, people, and advertisements this store stands out with the elegant design of the logo.

 Adobe Myriad Font

Billboard, Louisville, KY, 10/30/15

This is a font so well known that the designers now don’t even have to spell out what brand it is, but occasionally, when advertising a new product letters will accompany the signature apple emblem. This font represents everything that apple is about- sleek, elegant, modern, unique, and now universal. The choice to continue to stick with the font that has become unanimously associated with the apple brand allows for extreme effectiveness with billboards and advertisements. The simplicity of the billboard and the limited use of the font immediately trigger that association from onlookers. This billboard draws your attention and is perfectly designed to stand out and facilitate desire for the apple products.

Gothic 725 Black

Broadway, Lexington, KY, 10/31/15

This Urban Outfitters storefront was recently added to Victorian Square in downtown Lexington, KY. The designer did a great job of combining the brands aesthetic with the historical feel of this shopping square. The font used here is a variation of the font the brand uses for all of their logos and advertisements, which immediately improves recognition for onlookers. I think this location and the design aesthetic on the exterior represents the ideals of this brand- cool, eccentric, appreciation of the arts, and respect for vintage.

Spencerian Script

                                                                              Billboard, Louisville, KY, 10/30/15

This billboard is for another iconic brand whose logo and font is specific to the Coca-Cola Company. Here we see both the classic coke font and a new modern font for the message. I think the designer’s choice to contrast the classic with the modern is an attempt to draw both old supporters and the new. The simplicity and contrast in color makes the billboard stands out against the sky backdrop. The viewer is reminded that the brand remains relevant across generations.

Engravers Gothic

Target, Lexington, KY, 10/31/15

This is packaging for a purse currently being sold at Target. Marc Jacobs is a designer brand that has always used the font seen here. By featuring that part of the packaging through enlargement and boldness, buyers know that this is a designer product. Since this is not in a Marc Jacobs store it is important to emphasize what brand this is, and that it’s available at a discounted rate. I myself was attracted to this purse just because of that label, and the recognition of a designer brand that I like. The designer did a great job of creating elegant packaging that matches the expensive products sold in the actual Marc Jacobs Stores.
