After viewing the informance piece by Haven Dumond, I
learned that the Saturn Ion is definitely a sturdy car that is rarely dented.
Throughout the presentation Haven interspersed text with pictures and video of
the Saturn, including the one that she owns herself. Although not all of the
questions were fully elaborated on, they were all addressed. She related the
human experience to the safety features of the car, and used the commercial as
an expression of Saturn’s place in the media. The point that I thought was most
thoroughly translated was the connection of consumerism with the dent free
design feature of the car. Haven also related the experience of driving or
riding as a defined social environment in itself. My only critiques are that
the video footage used was slightly pixelated and unclear, and the structure
and the layout of the film was very rigid and lacking a creative edge.
The next film I reviewed was that of Hannah Ginter. This
film, which focused on the iconic Hangout Fest that takes place in Gulf shores,
Alabama every year, was both informative and engaging. I thought the voice over
was clear, concise, and addressed each aspect of design the assignment requested.
The photos she chose were vibrant and colorful, like the one shown above.
Hannah made smooth transitions from one topic to the next, which enables the
audience to have a more enjoyable experience. She also explained the impact
this festival has had on the city, and how recently it has become very well
known through media exploits. She even mentioned the aromas of the food that is
sold there, which helps the viewer become truly immersed in her presentation.
I’m glad that she went beyond the music aspect of the festival, which is by far
its biggest draw, by featuring the different activities they provide for
children and adults. Overall, I thought this film covered the required topics
in a creative way that felt less like a student production, which is where the
previous film fell short.
